Red Sox's Kutter Crawford Out for 2025 MLB Season After Injury in Off-Field 'Accident'

Andrew PetersJun 25, 2025

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Kutter Crawford will miss the rest of the season due to an off-field "accident" that requires season-ending surgery, manager Alex Cora said Wednesday, per ESPN.

Cora added that Crawford wasn't doing anything "irresponsible" when the accident occurred, but did not clarify the details about the accident.

Crawford had not yet made his season debut as he nursed a right knee injury that he suffered in 2024. He was coming off one of the best seasons of his career, in which he recorded a 9-16 record with a 4.36 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 33 starts.

"It hasn't been a great year for him," Cora said. "... It's just an accident."

Crawford hoped to be ready to go for the start of the season after dealing with the knee injury, but setbacks over the offseason forced him to begin the year on the 60-day injured list.

Crawford's season-ending surgery only adds to Boston's injury woes so far this year.

Alex Bregman, whom the team brought in this offseason, suffered a quad injury in late May and has been out ever since. According to ESPN, Cora said that the third baseman likely won't be back until after the All-Star break.

Bregman has 11 home runs and 35 RBI with a .299 batting average through 51 games.

The Red Sox are currently in fourth place in the AL East at 40-41. They were counting on Crawford's return to give a boost to a rotation that has struggled early on this season.

Boston has a team ERA of 3.95, which ranks 17th in the majors. A decent offense that has the seventh-most runs and ninth-most homers has kept the Red Sox alive in the playoff hunt, though, as they're just 2.5 games back in the wild card race.
