Chase Burns Reportedly Called Up By Reds, MLB's No. 11 Prospect Will Debut vs. Yankees

Julia StumbaughJun 21, 2025

Chase Burns will reportedly make his MLB debut 10 months after the Cincinnati Reds selected him with the No. 2 pick of the 2024 draft.

Burns is set to start for the Reds on Tuesday against the New York Yankees, according to The Athletic's C. Trent Rosecrans.

The 22-year-old right-hander is ranked as MLB's No. 11 prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Burns, who started the season in High-A Dayton after dominant final season at Wake Forest, has quickly risen through the minor leagues in his first pro campaign.

He was promoted to Triple-A Louisville on June 8 after posting a 1.29 ERA and 0.71 WHIP, while striking out 55 batters and walking four, through eight starts and 42 innings with Double-A Chattanooga.

Burns has since recorded a 2.19 ERA and 0.89 WHIP, striking out 14 batters and walking four, through two starts and 12.1 innings in Triple-A.

Rosecrans noted on Friday that the Reds have so far taken a similar development with Burns that they did with Rhett Lowder, Cincinnati's No. 7 pick of the 2023 draft.

Lowder made just one Triple-A start before he was promoted to the Reds last season. He went on to record six MLB starts, posting a 1.17 ERA through 30.2 innings pitched, and could have potentially gotten back into the rotation this season were it not for a lingering oblique injury.

Cincinnati will now hope Burns is able to take a similar development path. For now, he will slot into the rotation spot left by Wade Miley, who was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a left flexor strain.

The Reds are set to take on the Yankees at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET. Yankees leadoff hitter Ben Rice, who is batting .228 heading into Saturday, could be the first MLB batter Burns faces.
