David Ortiz Shows Unanswered Texts to Rafael Devers in Video After Trade from Red Sox

It looks like former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz didn't have much luck getting in touch with Rafael Devers before Devers' trade to the San Francisco Giants.

Ortiz showed a series of unresponded texts he sent to Devers in March during a livestream posted on Saturday to social media.

The Red Sox traded Devers to the Giants on Sunday in exchange for a pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jordan Hicks and prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello.

The unanswered texts showed by Ortiz are from months before that deal was finalized. The first text shown in the video appears to have been sent from Ortiz to Devers on March 25, asking Devers how he was feeling.

At the time, multiple reports had emerged describing the tense relationship between the Red Sox and Devers after the third baseman publicly disagreed with the club's desire to have him switch positions following the offseason acquisition of Alex Bregman.

The next text, sent five days later, appears to show Ortiz offering advice regarding Devers' approach at the plate. The following day Ortiz appeared to initiate a video call to Devers that went unanswered.

Showing text messages isn't the first time Ortiz has expressed frustration about Devers' relationship with the Red Sox prior to the trade.

The former Red Sox designated hitter previously called out Devers with a Friday Instagram story in which he posed with a statue of his No. 34 at Fenway Park.

"The thing is that to have some like this at Boston you have to just not be a hitter you have to be the full package," Ortiz wrote, adding: "Best organization in baseball."

After playing 14 seasons with Boston from 2003 to 2017, Ortiz joined the Red Sox front office shortly after his playing career ended.

Ortiz's apparent split with Devers is another sign that the three-time All-Star's relationship with the franchise had been strained for months prior to his trade to San Francisco.
