Giants' Wilmer Flores Discusses Video of Aroldis Chapman Exchange After Red Sox Win

Adam WellsJun 21, 2025

The ninth inning of Friday's game between the Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants was largely uneventful, with the exception of a moment between Aroldis Chapman and Wilmer Flores.

After Flores popped out to end the game, he appeared to have a verbal exchange with Chapman on his way back to the dugout.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Flores said he thought Chapman said something and was trying to get an answer about what it was.

"I thought he said something (and) I wanted to know what he said," Flores explained. "I still don’t know. That’s why I tried to ask him if he said something because I don’t know."

Flores added Chapman sounded angry yelling at Red Sox first baseman Abraham Toro as Flores was rounding the bases.

Chapman didn't address the situation after recording his 14th save of the season. Conor Roche of Boston.com noted the Red Sox closer was called for a pitch clock violation earlier in Flores' at-bat, but it's unclear if that upset him.

Roche also pointed out Chapman has a tendency to stare down the opposing hitter who makes the final out of a game, but Flores' comments don't indicate that caused any issue.

Chapman pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts to help the Red Sox win for the 11th time in the last 14 games.

After signing a one-year deal with the Red Sox in the offseason, Chapman has been terrific. The seven-time All-Star owns a 1.41 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 32 innings.

The Red Sox and Giants will play the second game of their three-game series on Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET.
