Rafael Devers Goes Hitless In 1st Game vs. Red Sox as MLB Fans Reflect on Trade

Zach BacharJun 21, 2025

For the first time in his career, Rafael Devers played against the Boston Red Sox.

Devers faced off against the Red Sox at Oracle Park on Friday, marking the first time that he matched up with his former team after he was traded to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday.

Devers finished 0-for-5 with one strikeout and a flyout that reached the warning track. The Red Sox also went on to win the game 7-5 with Ceddanne Rafaela's solo homer in the top of the sixth breaking a 5-5 tie.

While the 28-year-old battled his former team, fans discussed his change of scenery.

Boston received left-handed starter Kyle Harrison, right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, outfield prospect James Tibbs III and minor league right-hander Jose Bello in exchange for Devers.

The three-time All-Star spent his entire MLB career with the Red Sox prior to the swap, making his debut in 2017.

Boston came to Devers regarding a change from playing third base after signing Alex Bregman in free agency ahead of the 2025 season. Devers initially resisted the move before eventually agreeing to switch positions.

The Red Sox later requested another change after first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury, but Devers declined to move again.

Despite the disconnect, the trade was a surprise considering he received a massive 11-year extension worth $331 million in 2023.

Now, he'll continue to suit up for the Giants moving forward.
