Yankees' Luke Weaver Activated Off IL After Hamstring Injury Rehab

Zach BacharJun 20, 2025

The New York Yankees activated relief pitcher Luke Weaver off the injured list on Friday, per ESPN's Jorge Castillo.

Weaver initially suffered a hamstring strain while warming up in the bullpen during a matchup with the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 1.

He was expected to miss four to six weeks with the hamstring issue, but has made it off the injured list in just under three weeks.

On Tuesday, Weaver threw a live bullpen session that simulated 1.1 innings in full uniform at Yankee Stadium (via Castillo). It marked the final checkpoint in his recovery.

“Obviously we passed the activation date, but we want to be smart and make sure the recovery is going well,” Weaver said after the simulated game, per Jerry Beach of the Associated Press. “Today was the biggest step thus far and I feel really good. So I’ll definitely advocate to tell them how I’m feeling.”

The 31-year-old opened the 2025 season on a high note before the injury, posting a 1.05 ERA and 0.701 WHIP in 24 games. He also racked up 24 strikeouts and allowed just 11 hits in 25.2 innings of work.

Weaver served as New York's closer to end the team's 2024 campaign and transitioned back to the same role due to the struggles of Devin Williams in 2025.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone was noncommittal regarding the team's closer following Weaver's return, though.

“We’ll see,” Boone said Thursday, via Greg Joyce of the New York Post. “Let’s get through the day with Luke, and then when he’s ready to come back, we’ll have that conversation.”

Regardless of his bullpen role, Weaver's presence should provide a boost to a Yankees squad that has lost six of their past seven games despite remaining atop the American League East standings.
