Red Sox Icon David Ortiz Shades Rafael Devers In Photo, 'Have to Be The Full Package'
Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz called out Rafael Devers in a social media post on Friday after Devers was traded from the Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants.
Ortiz wrote that "you have to just not be a hitter" and "you have to be the full package" to play for Boston in a post on his Instagram story.

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Devers was "not the type of person" that the Red Sox "wanted to keep around," which factored into the decision to trade him to San Francisco.
On Sunday, Boston traded the slugger to the Giants in exchange for left-handed starter Kyle Harrison, right-hander Jordan Hicks, outfield prospect James Tibbs III and minor league right-handed pitcher Jose Bello.
Prior to the 2025 season, the Red Sox approached Devers regarding a change from playing third base after signing Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract in free agency. The 28-year-old, who primarily played at third during his first eight seasons with Boston, resisted the move before eventually agreeing to change positions.
The Red Sox requested Devers undergo another position change after first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury, but he declined to move away from his new spot at designated hitter.
As for Ortiz, the Hall of Famer previously told Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that he understood both sides of the situation.
"I’m not saying the Red Sox did everything right," Ortiz said. "But you have to give the club the benefit of the doubt. They’re not trying to make the organization look bad. They’re trying to make good moves that sometimes they don’t have the opportunity to explain."
Devers has appeared in three games with San Francisco since the change of scenery, recording three hits in 11 at-bats.
The three-time All-Star will face his former team on Friday night, as the Red Sox travel to face the Giants at 10:15 p.m. ET.
