Mike ChiariJul 12, 2025

In the final match of his illustrious career, Goldberg fell to world heavyweight champion Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event in the WWE Hall of Famer's adopted hometown of Atlanta.

After a one-of-a-kind battle Saturday night, Goldberg’s ceremonial retirement ended with Gunther putting him to sleep in the center of the ring.

The groundwork was initially laid for Goldberg vs. Gunther at Bad Blood back in October. The event took place in Atlanta, and Goldberg was in the front row with his family to enjoy the action.

However, Gunther made his way to the ring and cut a heel promo on Goldberg in which he criticized the multi-time world champion and suggested that he wasn't a good father.

Goldberg jumped the barricade and attempted to go after Gunther, but security intervened, and the situation did not escalate any further.

Shortly after the confrontation, the 58-year-old Goldberg announced that he would be having his retirement match in WWE at some point in 2025, although he didn't know for sure who the opponent would be or when it would take place.

In the meantime, Gunther dropped the world heavyweight title to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41, but he recaptured it in a rematch with Uso on the June 9 episode of Raw.

One week later on Raw, Gunther was cutting a promo when Goldberg's music hit, eliciting a huge reaction from the live crowd.

Goldberg came face to face with Gunther, challenged him to a World Heavyweight Championship match at Saturday Night's Main Event in Atlanta and told the Austrian Superstar he was next.

As a one-time world champ in WCW and three-time world champion in WWE, Goldberg posed a legitimate threat to Gunther in what was one of the biggest matches of The Ring General's career.

In the end, Gunther prevailed and retained his title, but Goldberg got to soak in the adulation of the fans and end his career on a high note even in defeat.
