MLB Fans Stunned by Rafael Devers Trade to Giants After Red Sox Sweep Yankees

Taylyn Hadley Jun 15, 2025

The Red Sox are the only team that can deliver the thrill of a sweep over the Yankees and, within hours, the gut punch of an unexpected Rafael Devers trade.

As news broke that Devers had been traded to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for right-hander Jordan Hicks, left-hander Kyle Harrison (optioned to Triple-A), minor league outfielder James Tibbs III and right-handed pitching prospect Jose Bello, fans flooded social media with a wave of shock, frustration and heartbreak.

Just hours after the Red Sox completed a sweep of the Yankees at home — capping a five-game win streak — fans were left stunned. Devers went 1-for-3 with a home run in the finale, helping push Boston one game above .500, but any sense of momentum was quickly overshadowed by the trade.

The team immediately jetted off to the West Coast to prepare for a series against the Seattle Mariners beginning Monday, but Red Sox Nation is demanding answers — with many now looking to Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow for an explanation.

The designated hitter and the Red Sox have had a turbulent relationship this season, sparked by positional disputes following the signing of veteran Alex Bregman, which bumped Devers off third base. Tensions flared again when an injury to first baseman Triston Casas sparked discussions about moving Devers to first base, a switch that he declined.

As the designated hitter, Devers was excelling, posting a .272 batting average with 15 home runs, 58 RBIs, and a .905 OPS.

Despite the early tension, it appeared the 28-year-old and the franchise had turned a corner, especially with the recent momentum in the team's production after bringing up top prospects Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony.. But now, after nearly nine seasons — all spent in a Red Sox uniform — Devers is heading west in a jaw-dropping trade that few saw coming.
