How Much Rafael Devers Has Remaining on $331M Contract After Red Sox-Giants Trade

Doric SamJun 15, 2025

The San Francisco Giants bolstered their infield by acquiring third baseman Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox, but the deal also carries a significant financial commitment.

Devers is in the midst of an 11-year, $331 million contract extension. Per Spotrac, he's making $27 million this season and in 2026, and he will be making $28.5 million each year from 2027 to 2033. ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Giants are absorbing the entire $250 million remaining on his deal.

Passan noted that the Red Sox will be receiving a package that includes left-handed starter Kyle Harrison, right-hander Jordan Hicks, outfield prospect James Tibbs and another prospect in exchange for Devers.

The writing was on the wall for Devers' eventual departure from Boston after the team signed third baseman Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract this offseason. He initially pushed back on the notion that he would play a position other than third base, and he denied the team's request to play first base after Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury. He eventually relented and spent most of this season as a designated hitter.

After a slow start to the 2025 campaign that saw him go 0-for-21 with 15 strikeouts through his first five games, Devers has bounced back nicely. He's hitting .272 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI through 73 games.

A three-time All-Star who was once one of the faces of the Red Sox franchise, Devers will try to make a similar impact with the Giants. He will fill in at third base for the injured Matt Chapman, who suffered a hand injury earlier this month. San Francisco is 41-30 entering Sunday night's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
