Travis Hunter's Jaguars Contract Reportedly Expected to 'Take Some Time' to Be Signed

Andrew PetersJun 11, 2025

Most first-round draft picks have signed their rookie contracts at this point, but one notable star has yet to ink a deal with his new team.

Travis Hunter, the second overall pick, still hasn't signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, it might be a while before Hunter signs as he looks to get the most out of his first contract.

"I don't expect a holdout. We rarely, rarely, rarely see a holdout, but I do think this will take some time," Rapoport said. "But if you're talking about Jaguars fans, you're talking about Jaguars people, I don't think they have anything to worry about because he's almost certainly going to be participating in training camp. You'd think they will figure out a way to get it done by then."

As far as the value of Hunter's contract, there's only so much he can do in negotiations. Hunter's deal will be worth $46.571 million over four years and will include a $30.5 million signing bonus, per Spotrac.

But as Rapoport noted, Hunter can negotiate other details like when the signing bonus is paid. Considering both Hunter's caliber as a player and the Jaguars' fixation with him, he likely won't have a hard time getting exactly what he wants.

Hunter, the 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, recorded 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns on offense while collecting 35 tackles, 11 passes defended and four interceptions on defense.

Jacksonville traded up to No. 2 to take the two-way star and clearly felt like that was a worthwhile move.

"There are players that you can target and acquire who alter the trajectory of a game. There are players that you can target and acquire that alter the trajectory of a football team," general manager James Gladstone said after selecting Hunter (h/t ESPN's Michael DiRocco). "There are very few, and it's rare to be able to target and prioritize a player who can alter the sport itself. And Travis is somebody that we view has the potential to do that."

The Jaguars are hoping that Hunter can be the player who turns their franchise around, but the first order of business is signing him to a contract.
