Gael Monfils Calls Out Tennis Bettors Ripping Him For Loss, 'We Both Know I'm S--t'

Julia StumbaughJun 11, 2025

French tennis player Gael Monfils says tennis fans who lost money thanks to his first round elimination at the 2025 Stuttgart Open are at fault for betting on him in the first place.

"Really? You're still betting on me? First of the month on grass?" Monfils said in a video shared on his Instagram story. "I play Alex Michelsen, 20 years old, No. 35 in the world? And you want to bet on me?"

The 38-year-old continued, "You're writing that I'm s--t. I know I'm s--t. We both know I'm s--t. And you still bet on me? Who's the dumbest between you and me, to be honest?"

Monfils then responded to comments apparently wishing him injury after the loss.

"By the way, you know my legs already cracked many times. I played with a broken leg already, so don't pray for that," Monfils told commenters.

Monfils took Michelsen to three sets, but the 20-year-old American eventually won 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 on Tuesday evening in Germany to move on to the second round of the tournament.

Monfils defeated world No. 4 Taylor Fritz on his way to the fourth round of the Australian Open in January, but was forced to retire from his next match against American Ben Shelton due to a back injury.

He more recently made it past the first round of the 2025 French Open in May, but was eliminated in the second round by Australian Jack Draper.

Monfils has said he had considered retiring from professional tennis years ago, but had been encouraging to continue competing by his wife and fellow tennis star Elina Svitolina.
