Liverpool Reportedly Sign Florian Wirtz on Record $171M Transfer from Bayer Leverkusen
Liverpool have their man.
The defending Premier League champions reportedly have "verbally agreed to a deal in principle with Bayer Leverkusen for a package reaching €150m ($171 million) add-ons included" to add Florian Wirtz this summer, per football reporter Fabrizio Romano.
Wirtz will now undergo a medical at Anfield before officially signing his contract.
The 22-year-old Wirtz scored 10 goals (two on penalties) and added 12 assists for Leverkusen in 31 Bundesliga appearances this past season, outperforming his non-penalty expected goals plus expected assists mark of 13.1 by a wide margin.
It was his second straight season with double-digit tallies in both goals and assists in Bundesliga play, with Leverkusen winning the title last year and finishing second to Bayner Munich this past season.
Wirtz is already an extremely gifted playmaker and should slot in nicely to the No. 10 position in Liverpool's aggressive attacking system. He offers the versatility to perhaps be a false 9 as well in Arne Slot's 4-2-3-1 system, but he'll likely be at his best sitting behind the centre-forward and directing play.
It's a much-needed addition for Liverpool from a creation standpoint, as right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold is off to Real Madrid this summer. Alexander-Arnold was one of the club's primary playmakers last season despite his position, a role which Wirtz will be expected to shoulder from the middle of the pitch.
Liverpool have replaced Alexander-Arnold in more than one way already, also adding Wirtz's Leverkusen teammate, right-back Jeremie Frimpong, in a €35 million ($39.2 million) transfer. There will be no resting on the laurels at Anfield.
Wirtz is a statement signing for the Reds and should be one of the biggest moves in this summer's transfer market. Liverpool won the league running away last season, and Tuesday's news ensures that they'll be the favorites in 2025-26.
