The team announced he will wear No. 48.

Anthony previously confirmed reports of that news:

Outfielder Wilyer Abreu was placed on the injured list.

The 21-year-old outfielder is considered the No. 1 prospect in the sport by MLB.com, with the site's scouting report on him noting that his "advanced swing decisions, quick stroke and growing strength allow him to make more consistent contact and generate higher exit velocities than most players his age. He pulled the ball with more authority than ever in 2024, though he won't fully tap into his plus-plus raw power until he lifts pitches more regularly. He could become a .300 hitter who provides 30 homers and ranks among the league leaders in walks on an annual basis."

Here's the type of power he's bringing to the Show:

That went 497 feet. Major power.

Boston fans, understandably, have been clamoring for Anthony to get the call to the big leagues. The Red Sox haven't exactly been hurting for offense, ranking fourth in MLB in runs (330) and sixth in team batting average (.255), OPS (.753) and home runs (83).

That hasn't translated to consistent success, however, as the team is just 32-35, 8.5 games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East and four games behind the Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays and Minnesota Twins in the wild-card hunt.

With Abreu headed to the injured list, now was a logical time to give Anthony—who has played all three outfield spots in the minors—his MLB debut. If he makes a strong first impression, that debut may turn into a regular starting spot going forward.
