Denny Hamlin won the FireKeepers Casino 400 at the Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, though it didn't come without some drama.

Hamlin outlasted Carson Hocevar—who blew a tire late and needed to pit, killing his chances to win the race after he led for 32 laps—to claim Sunday's event. Chris Buescher finished second, Ty Gibbs finished third, while Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson rounded out the top five.

The key moment down the stretch came with three laps remaining, when Hamlin passed William Byron and didn't look back:

Byron won the second stage and led for a race-high 98 laps but ran out of fuel late and finished 28th. To contrast, Hamlin led for only five laps.

Buescher won the first stage and led for a total of 13 laps.

After the win, Hamlin was happy to troll the Michigan crowd in attendance:

"I beat your favorite driver, folks," he said in his post-race interview, bringing back his favorite heel catchphrase.

Of course, Hamlin wasn't only trolling his his post-race remarks.

"It's fantastic," he told reporters of the win. "Chris Gayle, this whole team has just done a great job. We've been so fast throughout the entire year, just haven't finished it for one reason or another. Feels good to come here at Michigan where we've been so close over the years. This is such a gratifying day to restart 11th or something like that and drive through the field. I knew I was going to have to go 100 percent to get around everybody. Just worked them one by one."

It was not a very good day for Alex Bowman, however, who found himself slamming into the wall in a massive wreck earlier in the race.

"That hurt a lot," he told reporters. "That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken, and unfortunately, I've had a lot of hits. So I hate that for the 48 team. Couldn't really do anything except think about, 'Oh (expletive) this is about to hurt really bad.' Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a rough two months. I mean, honesty, we were pretty decent (in practice), I was pretty optimistic to start today. We got super loose and just had a long pit stop trying to make an adjustment to make it better. And never really got a chance to race again after that. Confident that my guys would have gotten the car better, and we could have gotten back up through there, but unfortunately, when you get in the back like that, (expletive) gets pretty crazy, and stuff like that happens."
