Belmont Stakes Results 2025, Video Replay of Sovereignty's Race at Saratoga

Sovereignty won the 2025 Belmont Stakes, capping off a terrific Triple Crown season for trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado.

The three-year-old entered with the second-shortest odds and escaped with victory late, after it looked like the favorite, Journalism, would build on the momentum built at last month's Preakness.

Sovereignty won the Kentucky Derby in May but opted out of the Preakness Stakes to prepare for the Belmont at Saratoga Race Course.

In victory, Sovereignty became the first horse since Justify in 2018 to win two Triple Crown races in the same year.

Rodriguez—trained by Bob Baffert—set the pace early before Journalism bolted for the front of the pack. It was Alvarado and Sovereignty who ran him down along the back stretch to claim victory on the 1.25-mile circuit.

Journalism has now placed second in two Triple Crowns, finishing as the runner-up to Sovereignty on both occasions.

Now that Triple Crown season is over, the question on everyone's minds will be whether Mott should have let his horse enter the Preakness, knowing it could have had a real chance at achieving immortality.
