Aaron Rodgers to Wear No. 8 Steelers Jersey After Contract in 2025 NFL Free Agency

Paul KasabianJun 7, 2025

Aaron Rodgers will wear No. 8 for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rodgers wore No. 12 throughout his entire Green Bay Packers career, but he switched to No. 8, which he wore in college at Cal, when he landed with the Jets in 2023. No. 12 was unavailable in New York with that jersey retired in honor of Super Bowl III-winning quarterback Joe Namath.

He can't wear No. 12 in Pittsburgh. The number hasn't been officially retired. However, No. 12 hasn't been re-issued since four-time Super Bowl champion Terry Bradshaw donned the jersey from 1970-1983.

Rodgers is officially aboard after signing a one-year deal worth $13.7 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The Steelers are hoping Rodgers pulls them up from being a borderline playoff team. Pittsburgh has been just above average over the past four seasons, finishing with nine or 10 wins. The Steelers have made the playoffs in three of them but haven't won a postseason game.

The defense has been formidable for most of that stretch, finishing top 10 in scoring each of the last three years. But the offense has largely struggled during that stretch until improving to 16th in scoring last season.

Rodgers could certainly help matters as Pittsburgh, which has added some key pieces to the offense like wide receiver DK Metcalf and rookie running back Kaleb Johnson, looks to break through in a competitive AFC North.
