Kyle Teel Called Up By White Sox, No. 2 Prospect Was Acquired in Garrett Crochet Trade

The Chicago White Sox announced that they have called up catcher Kyle Teel, the No. 2 prospect in the organization and No. 26 overall prospect in the minors, per MLB.com.

The White Sox acquired Teel and three other prospects from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for starting pitcher Garrett Crochet last December.

Teel's fared quite well at Triple-A, hitting .295 (.886 OPS) with eight home runs and 30 RBI in 50 games. It was only a matter of time before the 23-year-old was called up to the bigs to join the White Sox, who are sitting last in the AL Central with a 20-53 record.

Here's a look at MLB.com's scouting report of Teel, who played college ball at University of Virginia after before the Boston Red Sox selected him with the 14th overall pick in the 2023 MLB draft.

"Teel has a sound left-handed swing, a disciplined approach and a higher offensive ceiling than most catchers. He uses the entire field, with most of his home run power going to his pull side. He should hit for average while drawing plenty of walks and providing 15-20 homers per year.

"More athletic but less physical than most at his position, Teel has present average speed but will slow some as he spends more time behind the plate. He struggled at times with his receiving and blocking during his first full pro season, but he also made progress during the year and should be at least an average defender. He has solid arm strength with a quick transfer and makes accurate throws."

Teel now has the chance to be Chicago's backstop for quite some time. The White Sox obviously are in a multi-year rebuilding phrase as they look to move past one of the worst seasons in baseball history (41-121 in 2024). They do have some talent in the pipeline, though, with four prospects ranked in the top 36 of MLB.com's list.

Now Teel is aboard. Fans will assuredly get to see him soon enough with the White Sox in Chicago hosting the Kansas City Royals for a three-game series from Friday to Sunday.
