Yankees' Oswaldo Cabrera Talks 'Small Possibility' He Could Return from Injury in 2025

Joseph ZuckerJun 5, 2025

New York Yankees third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera is holding out hope he can get back on the field at some point in the 2025 MLB season.

Cabrera underwent surgery in May for a fractured left ankle. He told reporters Thursday there's a "small possibility" he returns this year.

"That is a small possibility, but a small possibility that I trust that one," he said. "So I'm a very optimistic guy that feels like good things can be on my way. So we're going to work to get back soon."

Cabrera went down in New York's 11-5 win over the Seattle Mariners on May 12. As he was coming on a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, he went back to touch the plate when his cleat got stuck in the dirt and his body weight landed on his ankle.

Trainers and medical personnel placed Cabrera's left leg in an air cast and he left the field in an ambulance.

Once the surgery was completed, manager Aaron Boone said it was "probably unlikely" the 23-year-old will play again this season.

Cabrera was batting .243 with one homer and a .322 on-base percentage prior to the injury.

Boone initially tabbed Oswald Peraza to take over at the hot corner. More recently, Jazz Chisholm Jr. shifted over to third from second base after returning from the injured list.

It appears that will remain the plan moving forward.
