"I am grateful for every defeat and victory, both in the ring and in life," Lomachenko said in his retirement announcement. "I am thankful that, as my career comes to an end, I have generated clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory. Not just in the ring but in the whole self. Only then can one achieve their true reward."

Lomachenko last fought in May 2024 when he defeated George Kambosos Jr. by 11th-round TKO to win the IBO and vacant IBF lightweight titles. He was in negotiations for a unification fight against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis, but that fight stalled when his manager, Egis Klimas, said he wasn't interested in fighting for the remainder of 2024.

"Loma is not in the mood right now. He doesn't have the motivation at the moment. He's taking off. He wants to spend more time with the family. … With Loma, just money is not what motivates him," Klimas said at the time.

Lomachenko, who was known for having incredible hand speed and displaying dazzling creativity in the ring, ends his career with a professional record of 18-3 with 12 knockouts. He's widely regarded as the greatest amateur boxer of all time, with a record of 396-1. He held world titles in three divisions from featherweight to lightweight.

While fans will still be wondering what could've been in fights between Lomachenko and Davis or other top lightweights, the Ukrainian star left an indelible mark on the sport of boxing in a short amount of time and will be remembered as one of the most entertaining fighters of the current era.
