Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Sanders appears to be impressing his coaches so far, with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees saying he has "worked his tail off."
It's still way to early to draw any conclusions about the four-man QB battle between Sanders, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel. Head coach Kevin Stefanski said in May he's approaching the situation with an open mind, and the order of the players could shift from day to day:
At the very least, Sanders is where he'd hope to be and perhaps ahead of schedule in terms of claiming a spot in the QB room. ESPN's Kimberley A. Martin reported Wednesday that some within the Browns think he can climb to the top of the depth chart.
"Listen, in that building, there are people who believe that Shedeur can 100 percent be the starter of this football team," she said. "You said it's incumbent upon the Browns to put him in the situation, it’s also incumbent upon Shedeur to do the work, which, talking to people in that building, they've said he is soaking up everything like a sponge."
To some extent, the breathless coverage Sanders is receiving is a reason why a lot of teams balked at picking him in the NFL draft. Plenty of his fans are coming around to the idea he could be QB1 by Week 1, and that's going to lead to a lot of disappointment if he winds up as the backup or worse.
The Browns open their mandatory minicamp June 10. That might be the first opportunity to see whether Sanders' success so far is a bit or a mirage or if he's actually outplaying the competition.
