Red Sox, Angels Have Heated Exchange on Video Before Wednesday's Game at Fenway Park

Scott PolacekJun 4, 2025

The Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Angels might not be traditional rivals, but tensions escalated ahead of Wednesday's contest at Fenway Park.

Video captured Red Sox first base coach José Flores getting into an altercation with multiple Angels players and coaches ahead of the game. What's more, Boston manager Alex Cora spoke with Angels pitcher Tyler Anderson after things seemed to cool down some:

It wasn't clear what led to the incident, but frustration is surely building on both sides. Los Angeles entered the series having lost seven of their previous eight games, while Boston dropped the first two of the three-game set and is 2-8 in its last 10 games.

Things have gotten so bad for the Red Sox they are a full 10 games behind the rival New York Yankees and in fourth place in the American League East.

As for the Angels, they are also in fourth place in the AL West, although they are just five games out of first at 28-32.

That Anderson was so prominently involved was notable considering he started Monday's 7-6 victory over the Red Sox for his team. He wasn't exactly effective while giving up five earned runs and seven hits in 4.1 innings, but he did enough to keep his team in the game before an eventual win.

It was the first of two straight one-run losses for Boston.

"We keep making the same mistakes. We're not getting better," Cora said, per Kyle Hightower of the Associated Press.

"At one point it has to be on me I guess. I'm the manager. I've got to keep pushing them to be better. They're not getting better. They're not. We keep making the same mistakes. I'll be honest about it and very open about it."

Perhaps this is the type of altercation that the Red Sox can rally around ahead of a series against the Yankees that starts Friday.
