Cleveland Indians: Never Fear, Lee's on the Mound tonight

KP WeeMay 24, 2008

In a span of just over a week, the Cleveland Indians' fortunes have changed.

Cleveland has lost seven straight, including a 13-9 setback at Progressive Field against the visiting Texas Rangers Friday night.

Worst, starter Fausto Carmona, who got rocked on Friday (6R, 2+IP), has been placed on the 15-day DL thanks to a hip injury.

What on earth has happened to the Tribe, who are now four games under .500 (22—26)?

Wasn't it just earlier this month when the Indians were the talk of baseball, when their starters didn't allow an earned run in 50 1/3 consecutive innings over six-plus games?

Then a disastrous road trip to Cincinnati and Chicago saw the Tribe go 0-6 against the Reds and White Sox, followed by Friday's defeat at the hands of the suddenly red-hot Rangers (15—7 in May).

But on Saturday, staff ace Cliff Lee will be on the mound to try and be the stopper.

Lee, who lost on Sunday in Cincinnati as the Reds completed the sweep, may have struggled in his last outing.

However, the right—hander is undefeated against AL competition this year.

Lee is 6-0 with a 0.67 ERA in seven starts vs. the junior circuit, though it could have been 7-0 as the Indians failed to score any runs two weeks earlier when he pitched nine innings of shutout ball in a no-decision against the Blue Jays.

Lee is 6-1 with an equally-impressive 1.37 ERA overall this season.

Against Texas, Lee is 3—2 lifetime with an ERA over 6.50.

Given the way he's pitched this season, Cleveland is looking for their new ace to stop the losing streak and try and get the team back on the right track.

Texas will send Scott Feldman, who is in his first year as a starter, out to the mound. The Rangers' righty owns a career 2—6 mark with a 4.32 ERA.
