MLB GM Says 'It Sucks' Cardinals May Not Sell at 2025 MLB Trade Deadline amid Success

Julia StumbaughJun 3, 2025

At least one general manager is disappointed the St. Louis Cardinals' climb up the NL Central standings could potentially stop the club from selling at the 2025 trade deadline.

"It sucks," the general manager told ESPN's Jeff Passan about the Cardinals' winning record.

According to Passan, the general manager was hoping Cardinals pitchers on expiring contracts like Ryan Helsley, Steven Matz, Erick Fedde and Miles Mikolas would become available before the July 31 deadline.

"Because the Cardinals are playing a tremendous brand of baseball, none of those looks like an option at this point," Passan wrote.

The Cardinals ended April with a 14-17 record, just two games better than the Pittsburgh Pirates and behind the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers.

St. Louis then started out the next month with a nine-game winning streak. The Cards went on to post an MLB-best 19-8 record in May, recording a club batting average of .258 and pitching a team 4.30 ERA over the stretch.

That success correlated with some adjustments to the Cardinals' bullpen, including calling up Gordon Graceffo and transitioning Matz to a full-time reliever role.

The Cards now sit second in the NL Central with a 33-26 mark, just four games back from the Cubs for the division lead.

June will present a major test as to whether or not the 2025 Cardinals are a postseason team. Starting Tuesday, the Cardinals are set to play 28 games in the 29 days leading up to July 2.

The Cardinals' ability to manage their rotation and bullpen through a month with just one rest day will be key to keeping the franchise from once more considering selling when the trade deadline rolls around in six weeks.
