Belmont Stakes 2025 Horses: Entry List, Vegas Odds and Dark-Horse Favorites

Joe TanseyJun 2, 2025

Six of the eight horses entered into the 2025 Belmont Stakes could be considered dark horses to win the third leg of the Triple Crown.

A majority of the pre-race focus will be on Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty and Preakness Stakes winner Journalism.

Sovereignty and Journalism should have the lowest odds in the field once the post positions are drawn on Monday night.

The value will be there if you want to bet on any of the other horses, but history is on the side of the darkhorses. Only one of the last five Belmont winners closed with odds higher than 10-1.

Darkhorses to Watch

Uncaged

Uncaged presents a convincing case as a dark-horse entrant because of the team behind the horse.

Uncaged's jockey Luis Saez went to the winners' circle at the Belmont Stakes with Essential Quality in 2021 and Dornock in 2024.

Saez is the only jockey to have won multiple Belmont Stakes dating back to 2017. He also won the Belmont at two different tracks. He won at Belmont Park in 2021 and at Saratoga last year. The 2025 event is at Saratoga due to ongoing construction at Belmont Park.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has won four Belmont Stakes since 2007 and most recently won with Mo Donegal in 2022.

The horse itself doesn't have a sterling run of results, but the team behind Uncaged will at least have him prepared to run his best race possible on Saturday.

Rodriguez

Rodriguez won the Wood Memorial back in April.

The Bob Baffert-trained horse didn't compete in the Kentucky Derby due to injury, but at full strength, the horse has one of the best resumes among the rest of the pack.

Rodriguez finished in the top three in each of the four races he ran in this year and he competed against Journalism at the San Felipe Stakes in March.

Three-time Belmont-winning jockey Mike Smith will be aboard Rodriguez, who is attempting to become Baffert's fourth Belmont winner.

Just like Uncaged, the behind-the-scenes pedigree is there, but the overall results for Rodriguez are even better and that could be the recipe for an upset at Saratoga.
