NFL Insider Sees Jalen Ramsey's Value as a Safety Amid Dolphins Trade Rumors

Jalen Ramsey's future in the NFL may not be at cornerback.

Albert Breer of SI.com reported Monday that "the more people I talk to, the more I think Ramsey's value now really is as a safety."

"I think that's a safe landing spot to put him in position to still do things that he does well," an NFC executive added of a potential change to safety. "So that's like a $10 million to $12 million player."

Ramsey, of course, is due another $21.1 million in 2025, the sort of number that teams don't pay for safeties (and a pretty good indication that the Miami Dolphins are going to have to eat some salary in a potential trade).

Breer added that "talks have been ongoing on a Ramsey deal. With June 1 now in the rear-view mirror, the cap situation is more palatable for the Dolphins. And I do think all parties would like some closure on this saga."

At his height, Ramsey was a shutdown corner and arguably the best player at his position, with seven Pro Bowls, three first-team All-Pro selections and a Super Bowl title on his résumé. He's a first-ballot Hall of Famer, no doubt, but the question now is whether the 30-year-old has any elite seasons at cornerback left in the tank.

Or, perhaps more accurately, whether a team is willing to give up assets and pay him like an elite player at the position on the bet that he still can play at the highest level.

It's hard to know if Ramsey would be open to a potential switch to safety. It's worked in the past for Hall of Famers like Charles Woodson, Rod Woodson and Aeneas Williams, helping them to extend their careers.

As Steve Wyche of NFL Network wrote in April, "Ramsey has told me how much he respects Woodson and his versatility and modeled his game (somewhat) after Woodson."

So it's possible that Ramsey would be open to the switch, whenever a trade ultimately materializes.
