Carlos Alcaraz Praises Ben Shelton as 'An Unbelievable Player' After French Open Win
Following his French Open victory, Carlos Alcaraz expressed his admiration for Ben Shelton, calling him an "unbelievable player."
"We both have huge respect for each other," Alcaraz told reporters. "Every time we face each other, we bring a high level and play good tennis. He's a really powerful player and can make any shot. … He's an unbelievable player."
In a moment of sportsmanship during Sunday’s match, Alcaraz even called himself out for a rule violation and insisted the point be awarded to his opponent. The defending champion went on to win the match 7-6 (8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in the fourth round.
The two delivered a standout match as two of the most electrifying young talents in the sport today, though Alcaraz admitted a heavy amount of the battle was internal.
"Today I fought against myself, in my mind," Alcaraz continued. "I tried to calm myself as I was mad, angry and talking not really good things. I'm really happy not to let those thoughts play against me. I tried to calm myself and keep going."
No. 2-ranked Carlos Alcaraz will face No. 12-ranked Tommy Paul in the French Open quarterfinals on Tuesday.
