MLB Teams Commemorate Lou Gehrig Day 2025 With Jersey Patch in Photos

Julia StumbaughJun 1, 2025

MLB teams wore No. 4 patches and wristbands on Sunday ahead of Lou Gehrig Day 2025.

The fifth annual edition of Lou Gehrig Day is set for June 2. Clubs not playing Monday wore the tribute one day early, according to MLB.

The No. 4 patches are designed with the font and colors of the New York Yankees to celebrate Gehrig's 17 seasons with the club, per MLB. Players also had the opportunity to wear red "4-ALS" wristbands during the games.

Lou Gehrig Day is part of MLB's effort to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Colorado Rockies outfielder Sam Hilliard lost his father, Dr. Jim Hilliard, to ALS in 2021. His mother, Tamara Hilliard, helped start Lou Gehrig's Day as an annual event in 2021, per MLB.com's Thomas Harding.

Hilliard participated in the 2025 edition of the event by wearing a custom pair of cleats, per the Rockies.

Sunday marked the 100th anniversary of June 1, 1925, when Gehrig started his streak of 2,130 games played.

MLB has celebrated the anniversary with patches and wristbands designed to honor Gehrig's legacy since 2021.

This year, MLB is also honoring Gehrig with a tribute video that will be shown in ballparks during Sunday and Monday games.

Gehrig was nicknamed "the Iron Horse" over the 2,164 games he played for the Yankees. He won six World Series with the club before he retired in 1939 with the illness later diagnosed as ALS.
