Novak Djokovic vs. Roger Federer: Start Time, Preview for 2015 Wimbledon Final

Steven CookJul 10, 2015

After all the madness of the last fortnight at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, an all-chalk men's final is set between top-seeded Novak Djokovic and No. 2 Roger Federer for Sunday on Centre Court.

It's a clash of epic proportions, pitting the ultimate Wimbledon champion Federer against reigning champion Djokovic. The 33-year-old continues to turn back the clock as he puts together some of the most brilliant play of his career, but now he'll have to go through the world No. 1 in order to secure Grand Slam title No. 18 and his eighth Wimbledon title.

Without further ado, here's a glance at the matchup.

Djokovic vs. Federer Preview

They had seen Federer work so many times before, but the Centre Court crowd was nonetheless stunned at what they saw in Friday's second men's semifinal.

There was Andy Murray—the local crowd favorite on the cusp of a second career Wimbledon triumph, at the best stage of his career—who was simply unable to match Federer blow for blow. It's crazy to say, but the Swiss legend has arguably never looked better as he blasted aces past Murray with ease and solved enough breaks to win in straight sets.

Murray just couldn't handle Federer's serve, as the Swiss converted 20 aces and won 58 of his 69 first-serve pointsan incredible number against anyone, but much less the game's greatest returner. Even Federer admitted he hasn't been much better than that at any point of his run, per Wimbledon:

While Federer looks practically unbeatable at the moment, he knows as well as anyone the test that stands in front of him.

This time last year, he was on the brink of his Grand Slam breakthrough and a victory against Djokovic away from Wimbledon title No. 8. He executed early on but just didn't have enough to overcome the Serbian in five sets.

That defeat begged the question of whether Federer will ever get that eighth Wimbledon feat or 18th Grand Slam, and that question will once again surface if he comes up short again. And despite how well he's playing, he avoided putting any expectation on what's to come, per Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch:

Djokovic has had a few hiccups along the way to the final but is putting it together when it matters most. He rummaged through his semifinal in a similarly brisk pace, dispatching underdog Richard Gasquet in straight sets.

The Serbian has been at his best except for a survival test against Kevin Anderson in the round of 16, but with how Federer is striking the ball and covering the baseline, he'll have to dial it up even further, as tennis journalist Carole Bouchard noted:

With it now being three years since Federer has won a Grand Slam title and Rafael Nadal continuing to slip from the center of the sport, a transition phase is set to hit tennis. Federer doesn't have much time left to chase major titles, and Djokovic is quickly approaching the 30-year-old mark as well.

The sport has revolved around both Federer and Djokovic for much of their respective careers, but that won't be the case for too much longer. Whether or not Sunday is the last time these legends face off with a Grand Slam title on the line, it will be worth remembering in their long history against each other.
