NFL Insider Doesn't 'Sense' Will Levis Trade Buzz, Titans QB 'Entrenched' As Backup

Mike ChiariMay 31, 2025

It reportedly doesn't appear a trade involving Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis is likely before the start of the regular season despite the team's decision to select Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

During an appearance Saturday on SportsCenter (beginning at the 2:30 mark of the video), ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler said he doesn't "sense a lot of trade buzz right now," and believes Levis is "entrenched as the backup" to Ward:

Fowler made mention of the fact that Ward and Levis have split first-team reps thus far at OTAs, but that will soon change, as the Titans plan to expand Ward's reps moving forward.

Levis, 25, was the Titans' second-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, and he has started 21 games over his first two NFL seasons, posting a 5-16 record.

As a rookie, he supplanted veteran Ryan Tannehill as the starter and ended up going 3-6 in nine starts, while completing 58.4 percent of his passes for 1,808 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions.

That earned Levis the opportunity to begin the 2024 season as the starter, but he seemed to regress, as he went 2-10 in 12 starts, completing 63.1 percent of his passing attempts for 2,091 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 picks.

The Titans went just 3-14 as a team, landing them the No. 1 pick in the draft and the opportunity to land a potential franchise quarterback.

Ward spent his final collegiate season at Miami in 2024 after stints at Incarnate Word and Washington State, and the decision to transfer paid off.

He enjoyed a career year, completing 67.2 percent of his passing attempts for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions en route to finishing fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting.

It looks like Ward will be the guy in Tennessee for the foreseeable future, which leaves Levis in a tough situation.

Because of his size, arm strength and mobility, he is in line to be one of the highest-upside backups in the NFL this season.

However, he has two years left on his rookie contract and it is fair to wonder if he wants to spend two seasons as a backup with no chance of truly competing for the starting job.

If Levis impresses during the preseason or in regular-season opportunities should Ward get injured at some point, perhaps that could open the door for some trade dialogue.

Levis will be playing as much for other teams as he is for the Titans moving forward since every rep he gets will be a chance for him to impress one of the NFL's 31 other teams enough to secure a trade and potentially a better opportunity to start.
