Russell Wilson Talks Decision to Sign Giants Contract, Hypes 'Superstar' Malik Nabers

Zach BacharMay 29, 2025

Russell Wilson discussed his choice to join the New York Giants in free agency, explaining that the rookie season of wide receiver Malik Nabers factored into his decision.

"New York and this opportunity here to play here, the world's biggest market, the toughest, one of the toughest divisions in football... a lot of odds against you….I just turned on the film and watching this guy Malik Nabers, man, this dude's a superstar," Wilson said during an appearance on 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, a Wave Original (6:41 mark). "I saw him, I was watching the film and just before I tried to make decisions, try to get a clear understanding of who the players are, this and that, and obviously you see the highlights and everything else, but when you watch every single catch and every single rep and every play, you get to see the kind of player he is, man, he's dynamic."

"He touches that football, he gone," he added.

The 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback also revealed that Giants head coach Brian Daboll played a role in his signing, as he previously spent time with him during the 2024 offseason.

"I really liked [Brian] Daboll too," Wilson said. "Obviously watching Dabes over the years, the guy who was a coach of the year, I dunno, two, three years ago, brilliant mind spending time with him actually came out here last year before I signed with Pittsburgh last time too and I just had a great appreciation of his mind for the game and how he saw the game."

The 36-year-old spent the 2024 season as a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers before joining New York on a one-year contract worth $10.5 million on March 25.

Wilson missed the first six games of his 2024 campaign due to a calf issue, but was still able to complete 63.7 percent of his throws for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns compared to just five interceptions in 11 starts.

While the Steelers suffered an early exit in the wild card round of the playoffs, Wilson finished 20-of-29 for 270 yards and two scores without getting picked off in the postseason.

The veteran will look to help New York get back on track. The Giants made a divisional-round playoff appearance in their first season under Daboll, but have owned a combined record of 9-25 in two years since.

This included a 3-14 finish last season, as New York owned the NFL's fifth-worst passing attack.

Nabers was a bright spot for the Giants, hauling in 109 receptions for 1,204 yards and seven scores despite the team starting three different quarterbacks throughout the year.

Wilson, Nabers and Daboll will now attempt to help New York bounce back in 2025.
