Drake Maye Has Made 'Great Improvement' Before 2nd Season with Patriots, Vrabel Says

Andrew PetersMay 28, 2025

Drake Maye had a fantastic rookie campaign for the New England Patriots, and his new head coach is already seeing improvement from the young quarterback heading into Year 2.

Mike Vrabel was asked about some interceptions thrown by Maye in practice, but the head coach didn't seem too concerned and directed the attention towards Maye's growth.

“I care about every player’s performance and that we continue to improve. There has been great improvement,” Vrabel said, via transcript from the team (h/t Pro Football Talk's Myles Simmons). “Everybody’s going to have a bad day. There’s a lot of reasons that go into it. We’re not going to analyze every single practice and have explanations for things that came up. The command, the operation, all those things have continued to improve.

“Hopefully, the operation, the communication today, and the execution has got to be better. We only have so many of these opportunities. I’m hopeful that in front of us, the media, that we have a better day.”

Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, threw for 2,276 passing yards and 15 touchdowns, adding 421 rushing yards and two scores on the ground in 13 games. His interceptions were a bit concerning as he threw 10, but that's certainly an issue that can get better with age.

Maye got some new support on the offensive line this offseason, including No. 4 overall pick Will Campbell, as well as a new receiver in Stefon Diggs. Those two factors could lead to a breakout year for Maye in 2025.
