Dak Prescott Praises Cowboys HC, 'Schotty’s Doing It the Right Way from the Top Down'

Paul KasabianMay 27, 2025

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is a big fan of new head coach Brian Schottenheimer's work thus far, per remarks relayed by Jon Machota of The Athletic.

“I believe that Schotty’s doing it the right way from the top down, of take the offense and defense away from it, take the positions away from it, take the coach and player aspect away from it, and let’s connect,” Prescott said.

“And you’re talking to one of the most optimistic people I think you’ll find. I’ve seen it the way that it’s going, I see the way people are buying into it, and it’s hard for me to think anything different. …

“I’d say more than anything it’s about being hungry and wanting to do everything the right way and particularly the hard s--t the right way.”

Schottenheimer was the Cowboys' offensive coordinator in 2023 and 2024, but he got the promotion to head coach after Dallas decided against extending Mike McCarthy's contract.

He's already molding the team in his image, notably adding a ping pong table in the locker room to add camaraderie and competitiveness.

In addition, Schottenheimer is having regular dinners with players, in an effort to “create one of the greatest cultures in professional sports," as relayed by Machota.

Of note, Schottenheimer has already ate dinner with new wide receiver George Pickens, trade recently from the Pittsburgh Steelers, at the Cowboys Club inside The Star.

Obviously, the Cowboys need to do something different after a disappointing 7-10 season, resulting in Dallas finishing four games outside the playoff picture. The Cowboys did win 12 games for three straight seasons from 2021-2023, but those impressive regular season efforts only resulted in one playoff victory.

Schottenheimer is focused on how the team's off-the-field efforts can impact on-the-field success. At the very least, he clearly has the respect and buy-in from the team's franchise quarterback.

“It’s getting created,” Prescott said. “Yeah, don’t want to say what it’s going to become. It’s something that’s got to define itself and get created amongst all of us coming together, believing in it, believing in one another and understanding that this culture is going to be the reason that we win.”

For now, the Cowboys continue their offseason program, which starts up again on Tuesday, June 10 with the beginning of mandatory minicamp.
