Rory McIlroy to Skip Memorial Tournament for 1st Time Since 2017 After Masters Win

Taylyn Hadley May 24, 2025

For the first time in eight years, Rory McIlroy is skipping the Memorial Tournament, set to begin next week in Dublin, Ohio, according to Field Level Media (h/t ESPN).

The 36-year-old is coming off a tough showing at the PGA Championship, finishing three-over and tied for 47th. Despite the setback, McIlroy is still riding the high of his first Masters win in April—an emotional victory that completed his career Grand Slam.

This will be just the third time in McIlroy's PGA career that he will miss the tournament after he also skipped The Sentry and RBC Heritage this season.

Despite McIlroy’s absence, the Memorial Tournament will still feature a star-studded field, with 18 of the top 20 players in the world set to compete—including world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who will defend his 2024 title.

McIlroy, ranked No. 2, is opting out just weeks after Scheffler chose to skip the Truist Championship, another signature PGA Tour event.

The Memorial, founded by golf legend Jack Nicklaus in 1976, remains one of the most prestigious stops on the PGA Tour, with Nicklaus still serving as host.

The tournament will run from May 29 to June 1.
