Alex Bregman Day-to-Day with Quad Injury After Exiting Red Sox vs. Orioles

Jack MurrayMay 23, 2025

The Boston Red Sox got an injury scare during Friday afternoon's matchup against the Baltimore Orioles.

Third baseman Alex Bregman exited the matchup in the fifth inning after he awkwardly rounded first base on a single. He retreated to the bag, called timeout and left for the clubhouse with a noticeable limp.

Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reported that his injury was declared "right quad tightness."

Bregman labeled the injury as a "day-to-day thing" while speaking with reporters after a 19-5 win over Baltimore.

“I was rounding first base and digging to go to second,” Bregman said. “I felt my quad grab. I didn’t continue running to second base for the double. I just stopped and came back to the bag so I wouldn’t make it any worse. I knew I needed to come out and see the trainer.”

“All my strength is still there now, which is good so far,” Bregman added. “Kind of a day-to-day thing at this point.”

Losing Bregman would be a massive blow to the Red Sox lineup. The 31-year-old is hitting .297/.381/.554 with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs through 50 games and had been proficient at third base.

He was immediately replaced by Nick Sogard at third in the game and designated hitter Rafael Devers could also shift back to third base if Bregman hits the injured list. Another replacement option could be Marcelo Mayer, who is the Red Sox No. 2 prospect and is currently playing in Triple-A for the Worcester Red Sox.

Boston is currently 25-26 and six games behind the first-place New York Yankees. The game against the Orioles was the first of a doubleheader against the team on Friday. Bregman's status for that game is not yet known.
