Indy 500 Lineup 2025, Full List of Drivers and Qualifying Times for Marquee Race

Joe TanseyMay 23, 2025

The field for the 2025 Indianapolis 500 will be led to the green flag by rookie Robert Shwartzman.

The former reserve driver in Formula 1 stunned in qualifying last week to become the rare rookie to land the pole position.

There are established drivers all around Shwartzman in the starting grid, including Takuma Sato and Pato O'Ward on the opening row.

Sato is one of four previous Indy 500 winners starting in the top 12. Eight previous champions in total are in the 33-car field.

Two-time reigning champion Josef Newgarden is starting at the back alongside his Penske teammate Will Power.

Indy 500 Starting Grid

Shwartzman topped the qualifying chart at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with a four-lap average speed of 232.790 miles per hour.

The Prema Racing driver was super fast in qualifying, but he lacks Indy 500 experience compared to the rest of the field.

Sato is a two-time Indy winner and O'Ward finished second last year behind Newgarden.

O'Ward is one of the best drivers in the field to not win the Indy 500 in his career. Alex Palou, who starts sixth, is near the top of that list as well.

Palou has been the dominant driver across the IndyCar Series this season. He won four of the five races leading up to Sunday's Indy 500.

The Spaniard has four consecutive top-10 finishes at the Indy 500. The best of those placings was a second-place mark in 2021.

Palou could be viewed as the favorite on form alone and he doesn't have much room to make up to reach the lead.

Plenty of attention will also be on NASCAR driver Kyle Larson, who starts on the inside of Row 7.

Larson is attempting to the double between the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600. He tried that last year but it was stopped due to a rain delay at Indy.

Larson is one of the most talented drivers in the world, but he hasn't competed in IndyCar, so he is the biggest wild-card in Sunday's race.
