Angel Reese, Hailey Van Lith, Sky Struggle in Blowout Loss to Breanna Stewart, Liberty

Timothy RappMay 22, 2025

Thursday night was not Angel Reese's night.

The Chicago Sky forward was held to two points in her team's 99-74 blowout loss against the New York Liberty. She did add 12 rebounds and three steals, but shot 0-of-8 from the field, had five turnovers and was a game-worst minus-25 on the night.

Natasha Cloud (18 points, eight assists), Sabrina Ionescu (16 points, five assists) and Breanna Steward (12 points) thrived against the Sky, while Courtney Vandersloot led the way for Chicago with 14 points. Hailey Van Lith finished with four points off the bench.

In total, the Liberty set a new WNBA record with 19 made threes in Thursday's blowout.

The loss moved the Sky to 0-2 on the year, while the Liberty are a perfect 2-0.

Reese was stellar in the first game of the season, putting up 12 points and 17 boards in a season-opening loss to the Indiana Fever. She remained a menace on the boards against the Liberty, but not much else went well for her—or her teammates—in the second contest of the season.

The Sky finished with a whopping 23 turnovers and shot just 36.2 percent from the field (25-of-69). The Liberty, meanwhile, had 25 assists and shot a blistering 55.9 percent from three (19-of-34).

This was a basketball clinic put on by the defending champions. Call it a learning experience for the young Sky as they continue their efforts to build a contender. Thursday was a good lesson in how far they have yet to go.
