Garrett Wilson 'Hopeful I'm a Jet for Life,' Wants to Get Contract Talks 'Rolling'

Doric SamMay 21, 2025

New York Jets star receiver Garrett Wilson made a declaration on Wednesday that is sure to be music to fans' ears.

When asked about a possible contract extension with the Jets this offseason, Wilson told reporters, "I'm hopeful that I'm a Jet for life and we get this thing rolling."

Wilson and fellow 2022 first-round picks Sauce Gardner and Jermaine Johnson all had the fifth-year options on their rookie contracts exercised last month, guaranteeing their contracts for the 2026 season. First-year Jets general manager Darren Mougey was asked about potential extensions for Wilson and Gardner earlier this offseason, and he said those deals are on "the to-do list," though he didn't give a timetable for when they would get done.

One of the most promising young talents in the NFL, Wilson has recorded three straight seasons with over 80 receptions and 1,000 yards to start his career in the league, joining Odell Beckham Jr., Michael Thomas, Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase as the only receivers in NFL history to accomplish that feat. Perhaps even more impressively, he racked up those yards despite dealing with massively subpar quarterback play in New York.

Wilson showed visible signs of frustration during the Jets' disappointing 2024 season, leading to some speculation that he could push for a trade at some point. New York made some major changes by hiring Aaron Glenn as head coach alongside Mougey and releasing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

After letting Rodgers go, the Jets pivoted by signing quarterback Justin Fields, which could benefit Wilson in a big way. The two of them are familiar with one another after teaming together at Ohio State, so their reunion in New York could produce some big numbers in 2025.

The Jets would be wise to commit to Wilson, Gardner and their other talented young players as they try to institute a new era under Glenn and Mougey.
