John Lynch Says 49ers 'Had No Idea How Special of a Player' Brock Purdy Would Become

Scott PolacekMay 20, 2025

Brock Purdy went from Mr. Irrelevant of the 2022 NFL draft to franchise quarterback of one of the league's most prominent teams in a development that even the San Francisco 49ers didn't fully envision.

"Brock is a tremendous leader and a fantastic representative for the 49ers organization, and we are ecstatic to get this deal done," 49ers president of football operations and general manager John Lynch said in the team's announcement of Purdy's five-year contract extension.

"When we took him with the last pick in the Draft, we knew he had potential to succeed in this league, but we had no idea how special of a player he would become. He has played at an exceptionally high level since taking over the starting job, and we look forward to seeing him continue to lead this team for years to come."

On Friday, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported the five-year extension was for $265 million with $181 million in guarantees. It also means he is under contract with the only NFL team he has ever known through the 2030 campaign.

There wasn't much drama leading up to the deal, as the quarterback participated in the start of the team's offseason training program last month and told reporters in January he just wanted to get something done quickly.

The 49ers surely envisioned the Iowa State product as someone on the roster for depth purposes when they drafted him and then kept him for his rookie campaign.

However, injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance threw him into the starting role for the final five regular-season games of his first year. It was a golden opportunity for a young quarterback to make a name for himself right at the start of his career, and he seized it in incredible fashion.

All Purdy did was go 5-0 in those last five regular-season games and then lead San Francisco to the NFC Championship Game. While he suffered an injury in that loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, the performance still made him the starter for the 2023 campaign.

He delivered again as a Pro Bowler in his second season while completing 69.4 percent of his passes for 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He led the 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 2024 season was the most disappointing of Purdy's career, as injuries around him limited the offense, as he went 6-9 as a starter. The team went 6-11 and missed the playoffs entirely, meaning it will be under plenty of pressure in 2025.

This new contract will only increase the pressure, although Purdy has done nothing but succeed for the majority of his NFL career.

And Lynch's comments suggest the expectation from the 49ers is that will not change.
