Hurt Syndicate Beat Sons of Texas to Retain AEW Tag Titles at Double or Nothing 2025
Hurt Syndicate members Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin beat Dustin Rhodes and Sammy Guevara at Double or Nothing on Sunday to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championships.
The Hurt Syndicate came close to victory multiple times, with both tag teams delivering high-flying maneuvers and brutal exchanges in a grueling, hard-fought match.
MJF, stationed at ringside, played a pivotal role by delivering a vicious eye rake to Rhodes. The distraction allowed Lashley to spear Rhodes through the barrier, setting up the perfect closing sequence as Guevara was pinned for the win.
Rhodes and Guevara, who are known collectively as the Sons of Texas, are the reigning Ring of Honor world tag team champions, and they earned an AEW tag title shot by virtue of winning a recent No. 1 contender's match.
After Lashley and Benjamin beat Top Flight on the Beach Break edition of Dynamite two weeks ago, Hurt Syndicate manager MVP announced that a match would be held to determine the No. 1 contenders and the Hurt Syndicate's opponent for Double or Nothing.
On Collision a few days later, Rhodes and Guevara clashed with CRU, which is the team of Lio Rush and Action Andretti. The Sons of Texas won when Guevara hit his GTH finisher, punching their ticket to Double or Nothing.
Over the past several months, Rhodes and Guevara have been a dominant force in the ROH tag team division. They won the titles from Matt Taven and Mike Bennett last August, and they have had several successful defenses since then.
The same can be said for the Hurt Syndicate as it relates to the AEW tag team division, which they entered into at the start of the year.
Lashley started off as a singles wrestler in AEW upon arriving in October, beating Swerve Strickland in his debut match at Full Gear.
However, Lashley and Benjamin defeated The Acclaimed in their first match as a team in AEW, and they followed that up by taking the titles off Private Party on the Jan. 22 Dynamite.
The Hurt Syndicate subsequently ran through much of the tag team division, retaining against The Gunns, The Outrunners, Big Bill and Bryan Keith, and the Gates of Agony.
In recent weeks, the Hurt Syndicate has also been focused on overtures from MJF, who expressed interest in joining the group.
Lashley, Benjamin and MVP finally all gave MJF a thumbs up after making him prove himself for weeks, resulting in him becoming part of the Hurt Syndicate on the May 14 Dynamite.
With no team able to pose much of a threat to the Hurt Syndicate, the Sons of Texas stepped up at Double or Nothing, but they were the latest in a long line of victims for Lashley and Benjamin.
