Jake Paul Explains How Canelo Alvarez Fight Fell Apart After Being at '1-Yard Line'
Jake Paul's rumored fight against super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez was closer to reality than it seemed.
During an appearance on Monday's episode of The Ariel Helwani Show, Paul explained the reason why the fight didn't come to fruition.
"We were on the 1-yard line and we got a pick-6, interception going the other way, man, in the fourth quarter, game-winner and we got intercepted," Paul told Helwani. "But I understand it, you know. Basically, they threatened to pull Canelo's $300 million contract if he was to fight me. That's how bad they want me out of boxing."

Paul called out Alvarez on social media in February, claiming he "ducked" a fight against him and chose to sign a massive three-fight deal with Riyadh Season. Alvarez became undisputed champion at 168 pounds for the second time earlier this month when he defeated William Scull by unanimous decision in Saudi Arabia on May 3.
Paul is scheduled to return to the ring against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. on June 28. He defeated Mike Tyson in November and has proven to be one of the biggest draws in boxing, which he believes played a factor in Alvarez withdrawing from a fight against him.
"If you are someone spending billions of dollars in an industry, and you aren't number one and having the biggest events, and meanwhile there's a little Disney kid running around spending zero dollars and having the biggest events, as a competitor, you're gonna do anything to stop that person and to be the biggest," Paul told Helwani. "So that's the nature of this dirty business in boxing, and the egos involved, and how badly people want to be the king of this sport. That's the nature of the beast."
Paul went on to assert that he would've been victorious against Alvarez had they met in the ring, saying that he looked "washed up" in his win over Scull.
