Commanders' Frankie Luvu Calls for 'Cheapo' Tush Push Play to Be Banned by NFL

Zach BacharMay 19, 2025

Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu expressed his support for the potential ban of the "Tush Push" quarterback sneak.

"My personal opinion? I think they should ban it," Luvu said during an appearance on Good Morning Football (h/t ESPN). "But I know the argument's going to be about, 'Hey, you guys have to stop it. Don't get us in short yardage,' and whatnot."

"But it's kind of like a cheapo play," he added.

NFL owners are set to meet in Minneapolis and discuss a possible ban of the play on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Luvu generated attention for his efforts against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that has primarily utilized the short-yardage play, during the Commanders' NFC Championship Game defeat last season.

The 28-year-old prematurely jumped over the line of scrimmage on three consecutive plays in an attempt to prevent a touchdown, picking up penalties on all three occasions. Officials eventually announced that a score would be awarded to Philadelphia if it continued.

"That's pretty much a scrum in rugby," Luvu said, via ESPN. "That's how I kind of look at it. And we've got to have a scrum, too, on the other side. And the scrum is, we have a cadence where we all go at once. It's not like you hard count and this and that, where now you're getting us—or myself—jumping over the pile thinking that you're going to snap the ball. That's just my own personal opinion, and I'm going to leave it at that."

The initial proposal, which came from the Green Bay Packers, was tabled by team owners in April. 16 teams supported the ban at the time, according to ESPN's Kalyn Kahler.

Twenty-four votes are required to implement the change.

Mark Maske of The Washington Post reported Sunday that it's "unclear" if the proposed ban would receive enough votes, even with revisions.

As for Luvu, he made his thoughts regarding the play clear on Monday.
