Preakness 2025 Post Positions and Complete Listing for Every Horse

Joseph ZuckerMay 12, 2025

Journalism will start from the No. 2 gate as he looks to rebound from his loss in the Kentucky Derby at the 2025 Preakness Stakes.

The Derby runner-up is the early favorite in this year's field after some notable contenders bowed out. Here's where everyone will be starting Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore:

2025 Preakness Stakes Post Positions and Odds

There will be no Triple Crown champion after trainer Bill Mott confirmed Sovereignty won't run in the Preakness. He's instead getting the horse ready to compete in the Belmont Stakes.

Legendary trainer Bob Baffert is taking the same approach with Rodriguez, the winner of the Wood Memorial in April.

"He'll be perfect for the Belmont," Baffert said. "I couldn't prep him like I wanted to [for the Preakness]. Once he had the foot issue, you got to let those things simmer down. I didn't have enough time."

Without Sovereignty and Rodriguez in the Preakness Stakes, Journalism has a clearer path to the winner's circle. Of course, the quick turnaround time from the Kentucky Derby and the short distance of the track (1 3/16 miles) mean victory is far from assured.

Goal Oriented is perfect in his two career starts, though this will be by far the stiffest test in his young career.

"He's really come into himself," Baffert said. "The race the other day, he won that with so much to spare. I'm watching these horses closely. I don't want to go there unless he has a chance to win. He's going to breeze this weekend and then I’ll know more, for sure."

River Thames' results have trended in the wrong direction. He was the runner-up to Sovereignty at the Fountain of Youth Stakes in March and then ran third in the Blue Grass Stakes a month later.

Still, the Todd Pletcher-trained colt will be a threat in the Preakness.
