David Beckham Calls Out Minnesota United FC For Trolling Lionel Messi, Inter Miami
Minnesota United FC got the best of Lionel Messi and Inter Miami both on the pitch and on social media during Saturday's 4-1 blowout victory.
And they did so much to the chagrin of Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham, who called out the club's social-media posts in the aftermath:
Minnesota's social-media posts included one that said "Pink Phony Club" and another that mocked the bandwagon nature of some Inter Miami fans who may also cheer for the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Yankees:
Even the supporter section's tifo banner said, "History over hype, culture over cash" with the words hype and cash in Miami pink:
Beckham may not have appreciated it, but fans of other MLS clubs have surely noticed the outsized attention Inter Miami receives on a national stage compared to most of the other teams in the league.
Minnesota appeared to have some fun with that situation, especially as it cruised to an easy victory and into second place in the Western Conference with 22 points. Inter Miami has 21 points following the loss and sits in fourth place in the Eastern Conference behind FC Cincinnati, the Columbus Crew and the Philadelphia Union.
Messi did his part in defeat with a goal early in the second half to cut the deficit to 2-1 after Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Anthony Markanich started the scoring in the first half for the victors.
However, Minnesota then added two more after Messi's strike to secure the straightforward victory.
The two sides will not play again this season unless they meet each other in the MLS Cup.
