Packers Sign Taylor Elgersma to Contract, QB Won 2024 Hec Crighton Trophy in Canada

The Green Bay Packers reportedly added some quarterback depth from an unexpected place Monday. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported the NFC North team signed former Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks signal-caller Taylor Elgersma.

Elgersma may not be a familiar name to fans in the United States, but he "won Canada's version of the Heisman Trophy last year" when he took home the 2024 Hec Crighton Trophy, per Pelissero.

While Elgersma was not on the B/R NFL Scouting Department's final big board of the top 300 prospects and top 16 quarterbacks leading up to the 2025 NFL draft, he was apparently on the radar of multiple teams.

Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk noted the Buffalo Bills also invited him to their rookie minicamp before he ultimately decided to join the Packers.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected him in the second round of the Canadian Football League draft at No. 18 overall. However, it seems like he will pursue his NFL dreams instead of remaining in the country where he made a name for himself.

Elgersma passed for 4,252 yards, 35 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while adding seven rushing touchdowns in 13 games last season. That was good enough to earn an invite to the Senior Bowl, and he must have done enough to catch Green Bay's eye.

"He's got a very live arm," Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said during rookie minicamp, per Zach Kruse of USA Today's Packers Wire. "There's a lot to like about him."

While it is certainly a feel-good story, something would likely have to go wrong for Green Bay this season for Elgersma to see significant playing time.

After all, Jordan Love is the surefire starter, while Malik Willis is expected to be his backup. Willis went 2-0 as a starter in place of Love last season and likely won't relinquish that role.

However, Elgersma could compete with Sean Clifford for the third-string spot on the depth chart. That competition could prove to be important for the long-term future, as Willis has only one season remaining on his contract with Green Bay.

Perhaps Elgersma could beat out Clifford for the third-string spot and then be in position to be Love's backup in 2026 if Willis heads elsewhere in free agency.
