After an enthralling, close finish at the Kentucky Derby, the eyes of the horse racing world will turn to Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore for the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes.

While this year's field is not yet determined, there is one notable horse missing from the lineup.

No Triple Crown Champion in 2025

Sovereignty rushed past race favorite Journalism to win the Kentucky Derby on a wet, muddy track at Churchill Downs. Immediately, reporters asked trainer Bill Mott if the colt would compete at the Preakness, to which he responded by saying he would do what is in the horse's best interest.

Three days after the historic victory, Mott informed the Preakness organizers that Sovereignty would not compete, opening the door for another horse to earn a leg of the Triple Crown title.

Including the runner-up from the May 3 race, Journalism, whose race decision will come on Monday.

A stamina-based racer who exhibited his patience and ability to hang back in the pack before making a late surge toward the front, the three-year-old colt has to be considered a favorite to win the Baltimore race if he does enter the field.

Sandman, a similarly styled racer who finished seventh and was a fan favorite in Louisville, will also have eyes on him to potentially earn a defining victory. He has officially entered the race.

His trainer, Mark Casse, is a previous winner at the race with War of Will in 2019.
