Gabe Taylor Says It 'Meant Everything' to Get Commanders Invite, Chance to Honor Sean

Zach BacharMay 10, 2025

Washington Commanders safety Gabe Taylor, the younger brother of late franchise icon Sean Taylor, discussed his experience of being invited to participate in the team's rookie minicamp.

"It meant everything...my dad was like 'I want you at the Commanders. I want you at the Commanders so bad.' I really wanted to come here too," Taylor said, per Hannah Lichtenstein of the team's official website. "I took a couple days, that's why I didn't say nothing after the draft. I just wanted to pray on it, and at the end of the day, it was my decision."

While he wasn't selected in the 2025 NFL draft, he received "multiple offers" from teams before choosing to accept Washington's invite (via Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post).

Taylor detailed his experience receiving his equipment for the first time entering the Commanders' minicamp.

"I had to take a moment, take a deep breath," he said, via Lichtenstein. "I just looked at the helmet."

Sean earned consecutive Pro Bowl nods with Washington in 2006 and 2007 before he died at the age of 24 due to a gunshot wound suffered during a 2007 home invasion.

His No. 21 jersey was retired by the team in 2021.

Gabe spent his entire college career at Rice and is coming off a senior season in which he recorded 57 tackles, seven tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, three interceptions, three sacks and two forced fumbles.

"I'm very versatile…I'm not someone who is scared to put my hand in when I'm in the box," Taylor said. "I can guard the slot. I can play zone."

Washington's 2025 rookie minicamp will wrap up on Sunday.
