Shedeur Sanders Says He Isn't Trying to Buy No. 2 Browns Jersey From DeAndre Carter

Taylyn Hadley May 10, 2025

Shedeur Sanders won’t be trying to buy the No. 2 jersey from fellow Cleveland Browns player DeAndre Carter anytime soon.

“I’m not trying to buy anything,” Sanders told reporters on Saturday with a laugh. “My signing bonus ain’t that high right now.”

Carter, the 32-year-old wide receiver, signed a one-year, $1.422 million contract with the Browns on April 1 after spending last season with Chicago, and claimed the number just ahead of the 23-year-old Sanders.

Sanders has worn the No. 2 jersey since high school at Trinity Leadership, kept it at Jackson State, and famously wore it at Colorado—where the number was retired in his honor after two seasons.

The former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback finished his senior season with 37 touchdowns and 4,134 passing yards on a 74 percent completion rate, leading the conference in all three categories.

Despite his standout season in the Big 12, Sanders slid to the fifth round as the No. 144 overall pick and was the second quarterback selected by the Browns, behind Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel.

Perhaps giving up the No. 2 marks a new beginning for Sanders, who will instead wear No. 12.

“Why I took number 12?” Sanders continued. “It was the best available number for me. That’s it.”
