Travis Hunter Compared to Stefon, Trevon Diggs by NFL Insiders as Jags' Plan Revealed

In Travis Hunter's day at rookie minicamp on Friday, the Jacksonville Jaguars revealed how they initially plan to use him within the context of a game setting.

Appearing on the Saturday edition of SportsCenter, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler explained the Jaguars used Hunter "mostly" on offense and may add more defensive packages for him throughout the weekend.

Fowler went on to say that multiple people within the league have compared Hunter to brothers and longtime NFL veterans Stefon and Trevon Diggs:

"I was told Day One at rookie minicamp, he was mostly offense, was not doing a lot of defensive stuff. That could change this weekend, where they implement him on both sides of the field. The plan really is for him to major in offense, minor in defense. Maybe eventually, he creates, like, a third down. nickel package roll on defense. Great comp I've got from multiple people in the league on Hunter, the Diggs brothers. He is essentially both Diggs brothers, Stefon and Trevon."

The comparison to the Diggs brothers fits nicely since Stefon is a wide receiver and Trevon is a cornerback. Trevon converted to the position after splitting time between offense and defense in high school and his first season at Alabama in 2016.

Those receiver skills have shown up for Trevon in his NFL career with 20 interceptions in 58 games over the past five seasons, including 11 in 2021.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen and general manager James Gladstone have been open about wanting to make Hunter primarily a wide receiver to start his career.

Gladstone said Hunter's onboarding process will include "a heavy dose of offense, and sprinkle in the defensive side of the ball" with the idea the two will "be balanced out" by the time the regular season begins.

The Jaguars made a big investment in Hunter as the first draft pick of the Coen-Gladstone era. They traded picks five, 36 and 126, plus a 2026 first-round pick, to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for the No. 2 overall pick that was used on Hunter, as well as picks 104 and 200.

Hunter was regarded as the best overall player in the 2025 draft. The Jaguars are trying to build up the talent around Trevor Lawrence, so betting on the reigning Heisman winner primarily as a wide receiver to play alongside Brian Thomas Jr. should provide a huge boost to the offense.

Depending on how many plays Hunter gets in the secondary, especially early in the season, he has the talent to be a difference-maker for a unit that allowed the sixth-most points in the NFL.
