Brock Purdy, 49ers Reportedly Moving in 'Really Good Direction' on Contract Extension

Julia StumbaughMay 8, 2025

The Athletic's Dianna Russini believes contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and Brock Purdy seem to be "moving in a really good direction."

"I continue to get really good information about the situation, meaning: This is going to get done, there's no drama to it, this isn't going to go off the rails. At least, that's the expectation at this point," Russini said at the 2:30 mark of Thursday's Scoop City podcast.

"If the question is, do I think Brock Purdy is going to have a deal before training camp starts? I feel really good saying that here, in May, knowing that things are just moving in a really good direction. And it's actually been pretty drama free as a whole."

Purdy is heading into the final season of the four-year rookie contract he signed after the 49ers selected him with the last pick of the 2022 draft.

San Francisco general manager John Lynch recently discussed the ongoing negotiations in a Monday appearance on NFL on NBC's Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast.

"We're having really good, positive discussions," Lynch said around the 1:41:30 mark of the podcast. "When it gets done, I'm not sure. Hope sooner rather than later, but hope is not a strategy. So, we're making progress. We've had good discussions."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport meanwhile said Monday on the Pat McAfee Show that he has "not gotten the sense that it'll get done soon, but it does at least seem like it's going in the right direction."

Rapoport added that he believes the 49ers are looking for a compromise "somewhere in the 50s."

A contract with an average annual salary of $50 million or higher would rank Purdy among the top 11 quarterbacks in the league. The 25-year-old is looking to cash in after ranking 10th in the NFL with 3,864 passing yards despite missing two games last season.

Purdy has been attending the 49ers' voluntary offseason workouts. Niners tight end George Kittle, who agreed to a four-year extension of his own on April 29, recently told Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area he was happy his team didn't have any "quarterback controversy" this offseason.

“I’m happy that we don’t have a bunch of guys holding out for contracts,” Kittle said. “I’m glad that we are not having a super drama-filled offseason. I think every year of my career we’ve had a quarterback controversy at some point. And to not have that, it’s going great."

The 49ers are holding offseason workouts on May 27-28, May 30, June 2-3 and June 5 before mandatory minicamp begins June 10.
